Salon Talk 23rd May

Everyone wanted to be one of Charlies Angels in the 70's

I saw a great article this week about the most popular hairstyles of the last fifty years from Doris Day in the fifties right up to Cheryl Coles 2009 must have cut and colour. All these iconic looks started the debate over what was the best haircut ever. Their was the Farrah Fawcett from Charlies Angels look of the seventies and the Jennifer Aniston phenomenally popular eighties cut that even had its own name ‘The Rachel’ after her character in Friends. and of course the Princess Diana with her flicked fringe. I chose Selina Scott the former news reader who had a short bowl cut from the late eighties as my favourite. It was a short style but with a heavy fringe and lots of chunky highlights. I remember as soon as I saw it I wanted my hair cut and coloured like that.

What makes them all special is they were all fresh and exciting when they first appeared. I remember Paula Yates mother of Peaches and Pixie Geldof ,had a bleach blonde bob with a blunt fringe it was an iconic early eighties look, and everyone went mad for it. And Mia Farrows elfin cut from the sixties will always be considered a timeless classic. What I loved about a lot of these cuts is that they can be as relevant today as they were fifties years ago. Who remembers Dusty Springfields early sixties beehive, probably not a lot of people but take a look at Amy Whinehouse’s disheveld beehive and you see where the inspiration comes from. A good hairstyle never goes away it just gets updated.

Everyone agreed how fab Angelina Jollie looked in Cannes last week.

How insulting it was to read last week that some commentator said women are going darker to give them an edge and to be taken more serioulsly in business. How stupid is he. Women change their hair colour because they want too not because they want to be taken more seriously, In thirty years of hairdressing I’ve never had a client wanting to change their hair colour to impress their employer, Who’d want to work for a boss who judges the competence of their staff by the colour of their hair.

The story about the swarm of wasps attacking a women the other day had me paranoid and insisting that we keep all the windows in the salon closed.

It’s not very often that people talk about Eastenders in the salon but when Lacey Turner coloured her hair blonde this week loads of clients mentioned it. And the verdict was generally everybody liked it. Most people thought it softened her image and gave her a look of Lynsey Lohan.

Everyone loves babies in the salon but the thought of have one divides the staff some can’t wait others are glad its all over, However this week everyone was unanimous in their verdict about the two big baby stories sixty six is to old to be having babies but having six in five minutes is wrong wrong wrong.

We got our first Christmas party booking form this week. The flyer told us to book early to avoid disappointment. Can’t say I was tempted, I like to at least get my summer holidays out of the way before I even think about Christmas.
