Salon Talk 7th August

Helen Mirren is growing more stylish rather than old

Are we becoming ageist is what we are all talking about this week. It started with all this fuss about Arlene Phillips from strictly come dancing being to old which is just a red herring most people think they got rid of her because she’s waffles on about the most random things. They say they have brought in Aleshia Dixson to sex up Strictly come dancing but if you look at some of the costumes the dancers wear sexing up isn’t the problem. It’s people’s perception of how we should be as we grow older that is the problem.

We all have an aversion to growing old but rather than fighting it by going for styles that are far to young for us or using the cliché growing old gracefully how about growing old with style. Nobody would describe Helen Mirren as old but you would describe her as stylish. Vivienne Westwood is getting on a bit but she is still setting the styles and trends for a far younger generation. Judy Dench Meryl Streep even Ann Robinson have all found their own sense of style and rather than going for dramatic changes as they get older have learned how to tweak their image to keep fresh and new. We all need to find a style that suits our image what ever age we are that means our hair our make-up and our clothes. Finding a style that suits doesn’t have to cost the earth. There are loads of things that are free. we do lots of complimentary hair and beauty consultations every week and all the department stores have make-up counters where the assistants are only to happy to give you some advice, and go in any good clothes store and they will have staff ready and willing to give you some styling ideas. The help is out there we just have to ask, I think we are only ageist when we see someone who looks like mutton dressed as lamb.

We all secretly delight in seeing celebrities not at their best it makes us feel good about ourselves and everyone couldn’t wait to show me the pictures in last weeks magazines from the new Playstation game ‘fat Princess’ it showed Cheryl Cole, Maddona Jordan and Victoria beckham all looking like they’d eaten a cow, luckily for them it was all done with camera trickery, but I’m sure they were right on the phone to their personal trainer after they saw those pictures just in case.

Personal trainers aren’t just for the rich and famous anymore neither is a session with training instructors just for the army Getting up close and personal with your own trainer is available to everyone now. A trip to Sefton park any night will see lots of people being put through some tough physical excersizes. Your own personal trainer is the new must have, mind you beware the hidden cost of a personal trainer you’ll need a whole new sports wardrobe before you start ,well you wouldn’t want them to think you were a scruff now would you!

When ever any of the staff go on holidays with their partners I always make a joke when they come back and ask if the are still together, Nothing tells you whether you are suited as a couple as to how your first holiday together goes. Now there is a word for it its called a ‘breakation’ Its when you go away and find out if theirs no future in your relationship.

For all those who have gotten through those difficult early days and are now planning your wedding don’t watch the Living TV programme Four Weddings one episode would put anyone off getting married avoid it like the plague
